What is rat and mouse control
Rat and mouse control is the professional elimination of commensal rodents (the brown or sewer rat Rattus norvegicus, the black rat Rattus rattus and the house mouse Mus musculus) through inspection, secure baiting, traps, entry sealing and follow-up. It is no small problem: Spain is estimated to hold almost 20 million rats, around 4 for every 10 inhabitants, and an upturn in callouts and interventions has been documented in 2025-2026 in cities such as Barcelona, even in areas where they were rarely seen before.
Acting fast matters because rodents breed at great speed: a female house mouse can have up to 8 litters a year and comes into oestrus within hours of giving birth, so a single pair becomes an infestation in weeks. Beyond the nuisance, rats can transmit diseases such as leptospirosis or salmonellosis and gnaw wiring to the point of causing short circuits and fires. At ERRADICAT we tackle it at the root in Barcelona and Girona.
Legal framework and authorised products
We work within the Spanish regulatory framework: rodenticides are TP14 biocides that must be authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Health, their use is governed by Regulation (EU) 528/2012 and our technicians apply the products with the legally required qualifications. The whole intervention is documented.
Other pests on the premises?
Rodents rarely come alone: in kitchens, warehouses and communities they often live alongside cockroaches. If you spot more than one type of pest, we review the whole source in the same inspection.
See the cockroach treatment →Rodent species we control
Identifying the species is the first step: each rodent has different habits and routes, and that decides where the bait and traps go. These are the three commensal species we treat.
Brown or sewer rat (Rattus norvegicus)
The most common in urban environments. It digs burrows at ground level, moves through sewers, downpipes and basements, and is a strong swimmer. Its droppings are dark, spindle-shaped, 12-18 mm long.
Black rat (Rattus rattus)
Agile and a climber, it prefers height: false ceilings, roofs, lofts and beams. Common in old buildings and warehouses. It leaves greasy smear marks along the routes it runs on walls and cables.
House mouse (Mus musculus)
Small and very prolific: a female can have up to 8 litters a year and comes into oestrus within hours of giving birth. It slips through tiny gaps and nests near food sources in kitchens, pantries and storage rooms.
How to know if you have rats or mice
Rodents are nocturnal and elusive, so you will rarely see them: you will spot their traces first. Seeing rodents in daylight usually means the infestation is already large. These are the most common warning signs.
How we eliminate rats and mice
We combine secure baiting, mechanical traps and entry sealing, because removing the rodents present is not enough if the ways in are left open. The whole intervention is documented, which is key for HACCP plans in hospitality and the food industry.
Inspection and identification
We make a no-obligation visit to your premises to identify the species, locate burrows, runs and entry points, and assess the level of infestation. With that data we design a tailored plan.
Tailored treatment
We install approved secure bait stations (closed, anchored units) with authorised rodenticides, place mechanical traps in sensitive areas where poison is not appropriate (kitchens, environments with children or pets) and seal cracks, gaps and entry points under 1 cm.
Follow-up and documentation
We make review visits to verify effectiveness and reinforce the control if needed, and we hand over the intervention record, essential for audits and certifications in hospitality and industry.
Why choose ERRADICAT?
What sets us apart on every job
No-obligation initial inspection
We make a no-obligation visit to your premises to identify the species, assess the level of infestation and design a tailored plan.
Approved secure bait stations
Closed bait stations anchored to the ground, with rodenticides authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Health confined inside the unit and opened only with a service key.
Mechanical traps in sensitive areas
We use capture traps where poison is not appropriate, such as kitchens or environments with children and animals, without giving up effectiveness.
Entry sealing included
We do not just eliminate: we close cracks, gaps and entry points, because a young rodent fits through openings under 1 cm.
Follow-up and documentation
We make review visits to verify effectiveness and hand over the intervention record, essential for HACCP in hospitality and industry.
Fast, discreet action
We act quickly and with discreet equipment, key against a pest that breeds exponentially.

We serve homes, restaurants, homeowner communities and industrial units with fast response and plans adapted to each type of premises and to health regulations.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we hear most before a visual inspection
How much does rat control cost in Barcelona or Girona?
The cost is adjusted to each case: it depends on the species, the surface area, the level of infestation and the number of bait points needed, so a home is not the same as a business or a community. At ERRADICAT we make a no-obligation initial inspection and, from it, deliver a tailored quote, also with no obligation.
How do I know if I have rats or mice at home?
The most common signs are dark spindle-shaped droppings (12-18 mm for rats, smaller for mice) concentrated in piles, gnaw marks on cables, furniture or food packaging, night-time scurrying in walls or false ceilings, a smell of urine and greasy smears along the skirting boards. Seeing rodents in daylight usually means the infestation is already large. If you spot any of these signs, contact us for a professional inspection.
How long does it take to eliminate a rat infestation?
A rodent control treatment usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks for complete elimination, with periodic checks of the bait points, and it can run longer in severe infestations. Acting early matters because rodents breed very fast: a female mouse can have up to 8 litters a year. From the first visit you will notice a significant drop in activity.
Where is the bait placed and what precautions are taken?
The rodenticide is always confined inside approved secure bait stations, closed, anchored to the floor or the ground and opened only with a service key; in sensitive areas we work with mechanical traps instead of bait. All products are authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Health and applied by staff holding the applicator licence under Regulation (EU) 528/2012, with a record of the location of every point and written usage instructions.
Do you offer a guarantee on the rodent treatment?
Our service includes follow-up visits to verify the treatment's effectiveness and reinforce the control if needed. We combine baiting and traps with entry sealing, which is what stops them getting back in, and we keep following the treatment until rodent activity is confirmed to be under control.
Why is sealing the entry points as important as laying bait?
Because without sealing, the pest returns. A young rodent can slip through a gap under 1 cm, so we close cracks, pipes and vents as part of the treatment. Rats also gnaw electrical wiring to the point of causing short circuits and fires, and can transmit diseases such as leptospirosis or salmonellosis, so physical exclusion matters as much as removing the rodents present.
