The wings that turn up on a window sill in Pineda de Mar in April are the reproductives leaving a mature subterranean termite colony, almost always the only sign it gives all year. Sweeping them up and carrying on as usual wipes out the trail. What works is to note the exact spot and confirm the activity with the audiotermes; once every activity point is located, the bait system with TP8 biocide works on the whole colony.
A good part of Pineda de Mar's housing stock is apartment blocks designed for the summer, with homes that stay shut for months between one long weekend and the next. In those flats the wood comes down to the parquet and the skirting board, and nobody walks across the dining room every day to notice a soft board. The colony works unwitnessed through the winter, and when the owner opens up in spring the flight is already under way, with wings scattered across the floor.
The centre of Pineda keeps houses between party walls raised when the joinery was made on site: solid frames, thick-panelled internal doors, staircases with wooden treads. That joinery ages well at the top and suffers at the bottom, because the foot of the frame sits a finger's width from the ground. The subterranean termite exploits that discreet contact and can hollow out the inside of a jamb while the varnish outside still looks presentable.
Pineda is stitched together by seasonal streams, the rieres, that come down from the Montnegre and run dry most of the year; the water, however, keeps flowing beneath the bed. The homes near those streams have the coolest ground in the municipality under their slab, exactly what a subterranean termite colony looks for to settle in. No leak or flood is needed: the shallow damp of the subsoil is enough to keep the colony active in any month.
The calendar explains the rest. The winged reproductives come out in spring, often after a day of rain, travel a few metres and shed their wings, so the pile appears inside the home or on the balcony even when the nest sits in the neighbouring building. You do not need to see an insect. These three are what we actually find when we reach a home, and all three can be checked without tools.
Mud tubes the width of a pencil climbing the wall, the skirting board or the inside of a wardrobe. They are the tunnel the subterranean termite builds to shield itself from light and dry air. If they are damp inside, there is activity right now.
In spring the colony releases winged reproducers. They fly little, shed their wings quickly and pile up on a window sill or by a terrace door. Finding wings indoors means a mature colony nearby.
The termite eats the inside and spares a thin surface layer, so the element looks intact. Tap it with your knuckles and the sound changes from solid to hollow. On flooring it feels like a board that gives underfoot.
In Pineda de Mar the flight is concentrated in April, with the first mild afternoons, and leaves wings on balconies in the town centre, Poblenou and the beachfront strip; the same episode repeats in Calella, Santa Susanna and Malgrat de Mar.

These dates are indicative windows. Flight depends on temperature and humidity, so each year it starts earlier or later: if you see winged insects outside these months, it is still a reason for an inspection.

We start by listening. The audiotermes amplifies the sound inside the wood and locates activity without lifting the floor or drilling anything, and from that comes a floor plan of the property with every point of damage marked.
Then the stations go in. We place indoor bait stations over the located sources and outdoor bait stations spread around the building's perimeter, loaded with bait for subterranean termites, a TP8-type biocide. The perimeter barrier is the part most providers skip, and it is the one that reaches the whole colony.
From there it is a matter of checks: every station is monitored, the bait replenished and the activity recorded until the nest stops responding. There is no shortcut, and anyone promising eradication in one visit is not talking about subterranean termites.

No, it can be put right, although in Pineda that pile of wings is information worth using. The spot where they fall narrows down where to listen first with the audiotermes, so it is enough to remember the room or the window where they appeared. The important thing is not to treat the episode as over: that flight is the chance to catch the colony, and letting it pass gives it months of undisturbed work.
Yes, it is the most repeated scenario in the holiday blocks of Poblenou. The colony does not need anyone at home: the parquet, the skirting board and the damp in the ground are enough for it. On opening up it is worth checking the floor by the picture windows and balcony doors in case wings from the April swarm were left behind, and treading carefully through the busy areas: a board that feels different already justifies asking for a check.
Yes, somewhat more than in the rest of Pineda, because the ground beside the streams keeps its damp all year and the subterranean termite lives right up against it. It does not mean there is a colony under every house: it means the small signs deserve an early enquiry.
