Why does so much untreated original wood turn up in Arenys de Munt?

Arenys de Munt had 3,305 inhabitants in 1850, 3,003 in 1900 and 3,006 in 1950, according to the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana and the municipal register published by Idescat. A hundred years without growth are a hundred years without any economic reason to rebuild a floor structure. The wood put in place in the 18th century is still there, with its original section and no previous treatment whatsoever. Barcelona and Blanes have that curve exactly the other way round.

The core of Arenys de Munt went up in the 18th century: the municipality grew from 585 inhabitants in 1718 to 1,420 in 1787, according to the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana. The owners wanted to know what they had before deciding anything. Our technicians went over the 26 beams of the floor structure with audiotermes on 3 July 2026 and noted every piece by its number. Beams 11 and 13, in the corridor, had lost 15 % of their section at the head, and beam 13 also showed visible termite galleries. In beams 24 and 25 only traces remained. Six pieces turned up lifted 2 to 3 millimetres off their bearing, five in a row and the sixth in Room 2, and in beam 4 there was longhorn beetle activity. With woodworm in all 26 pieces and no live termites that day, the report recommended reinforcing the compromised beams. The preventive programme was settled at five indoor bait stations, with checks every six to eight weeks for half a year.

Three signs that really tell you whether there is activity

You do not need to see an insect. These three are what we actually find when we reach a home, and all three can be checked without tools.

Mud tubes the width of a pencil climbing the wall, the skirting board or the inside of a wardrobe. They are the tunnel the subterranean termite builds to shield itself from light and dry air. If they are damp inside, there is activity right now.

In spring the colony releases winged reproducers. They fly little, shed their wings quickly and pile up on a window sill or by a terrace door. Finding wings indoors means a mature colony nearby.

The termite eats the inside and spares a thin surface layer, so the element looks intact. Tap it with your knuckles and the sound changes from solid to hollow. On flooring it feels like a board that gives underfoot.

When do termites fly in Arenys de Munt?

The bait system

We start by listening. The audiotermes amplifies the sound inside the wood and locates activity without lifting the floor or drilling anything, and from that comes a floor plan of the property with every point of damage marked.

Then the stations go in. We place indoor bait stations over the located sources and outdoor bait stations spread around the building's perimeter, loaded with bait for subterranean termites, a TP8-type biocide. The perimeter barrier is the part most providers skip, and it is the one that reaches the whole colony.

From there it is a matter of checks: every station is monitored, the bait replenished and the activity recorded until the nest stops responding. There is no shortcut, and anyone promising eradication in one visit is not talking about subterranean termites.

What we get asked in Arenys de Munt

No live termites turned up in my Arenys de Munt house on the day of the visit. Why do you propose a preventive programme?

Because the traces in four beams say the subterranean termite has been inside and the house had never had any treatment. The audiotermes reports what can be heard on the day of the visit: our technicians listen for activity, they do not certify that a colony is dead beneath the ground. With visible traces and no barrier in place, the honest way to settle the matter is to put in indoor bait stations. Then we come back every six to eight weeks, for half a year, to read whether the system registers consumption.

Can there be woodworm, termites and longhorn beetle in the same ceiling?

Yes. In the floor structure we inspected in Arenys de Munt all three lived side by side: woodworm in the 26 beams, termite traces in 4 and a longhorn beetle in a single piece, number 4. Each leaves a different mark and each is treated differently. The subterranean termite is handled with a bait system, because the colony lives in the soil and not in the beam. Woodworm and longhorn beetle are treated on the piece itself: prior stripping when a coat seals the surface, non-return valves for the pressure injection and double fumigation to finish.

My Arenys de Munt house is on a slope and the ground floor rests on the ground. Does that make a difference?
