The old town of Vilanova holds two historic cores, la Geltrú and the centre, and in both it pays to look at all the wood in one go. Some beams may have woodworm while, at ground level, the subterranean termite has not yet given any sign. La Geltrú keeps village houses raised on rubble masonry walls, with beams resting directly on the stone and staircases and joinery that have stood in place for generations. They are houses refurbished piece by piece, a new kitchen here, a bathroom there, and the original timber structure carries on working above. In that kind of home the woodworm advances quietly through the beams while the damp in the walls keeps up the conditions that suit wood-boring insects.
The Barri de Mar grew with narrow, deep fishermen's houses, nearly all of them refurbished inside today. The usual refurbishment replaces floors, services and finishes, but leaves the original ceilings hidden behind plasterboard and does not change how the house meets the ground. That is the weak point: the subterranean termite comes in through the floor slab and the foot of the walls, which are still the ones they always were, and works out of sight until a skirting board goes hollow.
In the centre the buildings between party walls dominate, with wooden joist floors behind false ceilings, commercial ground floors and inner courtyards that concentrate damp. The joists cannot be seen from the flat, so the first warning usually comes through the floor: a parquet that sounds different, a door that catches, loose wings on a balcony after a mild day. When one of those signs appears, listening with audiotermes tells us what is above the false ceiling without opening it.

The August 2026 report goes through the house ceiling by ceiling. The beams were assessed in full, one by one, with woodworm as the main character, and the check was completed by looking for signs of subterranean termite, which was channelled into prevention. The result fits in a single document: pressure injection with non-return valves for the affected wood and bait stations with TP8 biocide for the termite risk. The owners received one reading of all their wood, with both actions defined and ready to schedule.
You do not need to see an insect. These three are what we actually find when we reach a home, and all three can be checked without tools.
Mud tubes the width of a pencil climbing the wall, the skirting board or the inside of a wardrobe. They are the tunnel the subterranean termite builds to shield itself from light and dry air. If they are damp inside, there is activity right now.
In spring the colony releases winged reproducers. They fly little, shed their wings quickly and pile up on a window sill or by a terrace door. Finding wings indoors means a mature colony nearby.
The termite eats the inside and spares a thin surface layer, so the element looks intact. Tap it with your knuckles and the sound changes from solid to hollow. On flooring it feels like a board that gives underfoot.
In Vilanova the swarming flight arrives with the first humid warmth of spring, and the wings show up sooner on the balconies of the centre and the Barri de Mar than in the areas of houses with gardens.

These dates are indicative windows. Flight depends on temperature and humidity, so each year it starts earlier or later: if you see winged insects outside these months, it is still a reason for an inspection.

We start by listening. The audiotermes amplifies the sound inside the wood and locates activity without lifting the floor or drilling anything, and from that comes a floor plan of the property with every point of damage marked.
Then the stations go in. We place indoor bait stations over the located sources and outdoor bait stations spread around the building's perimeter, loaded with bait for subterranean termites, a TP8-type biocide. The perimeter barrier is the part most providers skip, and it is the one that reaches the whole colony.
From there it is a matter of checks: every station is monitored, the bait replenished and the activity recorded until the nest stops responding. There is no shortcut, and anyone promising eradication in one visit is not talking about subterranean termites.

Woodworm works the beams from the inside and the subterranean termite, if it comes, does so from the ground, so assessing both on the same technical visit leaves the home diagnosed in one go. The report records which beams need treatment and which points are best kept under watch, with each action quoted in writing.
Yes, because in the Barri de Mar a refurbishment renews what can be seen, but the floor slab and the wall bases are usually the original ones, and that is where the subterranean termite comes in without leaving a trace on the finishes. Many false ceilings, besides, hide the old beams. Listening with audiotermes lets us check that hidden wood without touching the new work.
No, and in the homes of Vilanova it is the first thing we clear up. The bait stations are installed in a single working day and the later checks are brief visits. The injection of the beams, when it is part of the plan, is organised room by room, so the house stays in use while the programme moves forward.
It is not usually termite: in the flats of central Vilanova, fine dust piled up under the wood points to woodworm, which pushes the remains of its galleries out through the exit holes. The subterranean termite leaves no frass; it leaves galleries with soil, wood that gives way from the inside and, in spring, loose wings. The check is made with a visual inspection and audiotermes, and from it comes which system applies: injection for woodworm, baits for termites.
You do get one, and in Vilanova each system carries its own in writing: the termite one covers 3 years from the moment the colony is eradicated, annual inspection included, and the woodworm one, 1 year. The prevention stations, besides, are checked periodically, so any new movement from the ground is looked for first in the stations, not in the wood of the house.

The ROESP is the Spanish official register of pesticide establishments and services. It is the legal requirement for applying professional-use biocides, and not everyone offering these treatments meets it.
The technician who signs the reports, Sergi Casadevall Casas, has been treating termites and woodworm in Barcelona and Girona since November 2011, holding the biocide applicator licence. Visits are always made by our technicians, never by salespeople.
